This week in art

This week, I have been taking an online class called Paper to Painting Workshop with Roben-Marie Smith. Here are some of the steps in my first project. You can click the images for a larger view.

First step: foundation collage.

Paper to Painting 1

Second step, add some paint, stamping, doodling.

Paper to Painting 2

More paint.

Paper to Painting 3

Cut up the sheet and glue onto three canvas boards.

Paper to Painting 4

Then I decided on how to orient the canvases into a triptych, and I drew a line with some curlicues to tie the three together.

And now, I begin a second one with this collage.

This week in art

Here is a new mandala, coloured digitally.

Digital mandala

This is a colouring page by Ellen Topitzer that I coloured digitally.

Got Sass!

I am still working on Robin Mead’s online class, Crazy Colorful Cityscapes.

This is a whimsical cityscape I did in Procreate, using Alice Hendon’s Ringz pattern.

And this is the cityscape I created with the rubber stamps I carved last week.

This week in art

This week, I am working on Robin Mead’s cool online class, Crazy Colorful Cityscapes.

In this cityscape collage, the buildings are cut from a variety of painted papers.

Although the course uses traditional methods, I had to try my hand at doing a digital cityscape.

In this week’s lesson, we are using stamps to create our buildings. Here is a collection of my handmade stamps. I had a good collection already, and I carved some new ones this week.

I wrote a blog post showing my colouring process that combines a colouring page from Dover Publications, digital painting, and real-life coloured pencil drawing.

I created a new celtic knot template.

Sometimes, mindlessness can be good!

In the last week, I decided to prep a bunch of art journal pages, just so I wouldn’t be faced with the white page syndrome. When I painted a page, I used a piece of paper behind the page I was working on, to protect the rest of the book. After a few days, I had several pieces of paper that looked like this.

I was intrigued by the patterns, so I grabbed my circle punches and got a bunch of these.

paint cutouts

Aren’t they cool! They look like miniature paintings, abstracts and landscapes.

Here are some closeups (click the image for a larger view).

I took one of them and made a pin with it. (It’s about 2-1/4″ in diameter).

Isn’t it amazing how beautiful things can come from unexpected places?

2015 Creativity Challenge – week 2

This is week two of Kelly Barone 2015 Challenge. Starting today, I will endeavour to post every Wednesday. Here are my pieces for week 2.

These two pieces started out as Gelli prints, with added stamping and stencilling, and use my Silhouette masks. In the first, I traced around one of the Yoga masks to cut a silhouette from sheet music. In the second, I used one of the Sisters masks when doing the Gelli printing. In both cases, I added some shading around each piece with a black coloured pencil.

After many years, I decided to get rid of my Cricut and buy a Silhouette so that I can cut my own designs. Sadly, there seems to be something wrong with the power supply, so I won’t be doing any cutting just yet. Bummer.

My new silhouette

Before discarding the Cricut, I cut a bunch of snowflakes (or mandalas) sized especially for the round Gelli plate.

Die-cut shapes

I love making my own stamps, as I talked about in this blog post from last year. These are all made with fun foam, some with textured fun foam. The possibilities are endless!

Finally, a bit of digital art. I have been experimenting with combining Gelli prints digitally in Photoshop Elements. These four pieces were made by superimposing the same four Gelli prints with varying blending modes and transparency.

Gelli® Jam Art Journal Workshop part 1

I have been taking a wonderful online class, Gelli® Jam Art Journal Workshop with Joanna Grant, part of the Artful Gathering Online Art Retreats.

Joanna has shared some cool Gelli® printing tips. I just finished the first project in the class, a Gelli®-printed tag journal.
