The papers from Set 9 are designed especially for tangling, with textured backgrounds and shapes with colours from the background. Here is an example on which I drew some simple mandalas.

This week in art

A few weeks ago, I did an exercise where I took one of my mandalas, and created four different digital paintings using different backgrounds, textures, and colours. This week, I have a new set of four digital art pieces based on one mandala design from my Genevieve’s Mandalas colouring book.

Procreate™ Brushes

In the Digital Tangling group on Facebook, people were asking questions about using brushes in the Procreate app, and so I thought I would go over some the basics. You can click the image to enlarge them.

OVERVIEW and BASIC BRUSHES

This is an overview of the brush panel.

Procreate

Here are some of my go-to brushes.

For simple line drawing, I like the Gel Pen (under Inking).

Procreate

For shading and highlighting, I use the Shading Graphite (under Sketching).

Procreate

For simple painting, the Round Brush (under Painting).

Procreate

One of my favourite for textured backgrounds is Rusted Decay (under Industrial).

STAMP BRUSHES

All the brushes I have talked about so far behave like paint brushes, in that when you touch and drag, you lay down colour on your canvas.

But there are also brushes that behave more like rubber stamps, and put down a single image. Here is an example, Disco (under Retro).

Procreate

As a mixed-media artist, I use this feature and created my own brushes either by scanning images, or drawing them digitally. Here are a few of my brushes.

By using the brush size slider, you can adapt the size of the brush to your painting.

I made a bunch of brushes from rosettes I drew in an app called iOrnament.

Here us one of my digital paintings where I used several of my custom brushes.

CUSTOM BRUSHES

In the Procreate community, there is a forum dedicated to custom brushes. Generous Procreate users share custom brushes they have created. You can download them and add them to your app by clicking the + sign at the top right of the Brushes panel.

This is the Stitches and Sequins brush set by Jay Versluis. I like to use these to give a fabric look to my mixed media paintings.

Here is an example in one of my digital paintings featuring a photo of my grandmother.

Another cool set of brushes are these Gradient brushes by sculptingman in the Procreate forums. Find the brushes and a tutorial here.

In addition to the look of the brushes, there are a whole bunch of settings for each brush. You can see them by touching the brush in the panel a second time.

Procreate

We’ll leave a detailed discussion of the settings for another time, but if you want to play with them, swipe left on a brush in the Brushes panel and Duplicate it. You can then play with the settings in the duplicate brush to see what they do.
